1880's French Work Table Inspires Kitchen Island
March 12, 2014The L-shaped island was inspired by an 1880’s French work table and provides a visually pleasing contrast to the 18th century kitchen styling while mirroring the zigzag hutch, which stands on the opposite wall.
“This extraordinary re-creation of an authentic French country kitchen was the product of the collaboration between John Packard, furniture designer and cabinetmaker, and the homeowner. The kitchen is a synthesis of several unique, authentic pieces of French furniture combined with a little whimsy. Drawing on Packard’s 30+ years of experience as a furniture maker and restorer, the hand-rubbed stain is absorbed unevenly on the open-grained oak wood, giving the feeling of an 18th century antique finish which has worn away over the centuries.”
