The New Paradigm in Entertaining at Home

With the winter holidays approaching, what is your take on entertaining at home this season?

Last year, the idea of entertaining family and friends at home was seemingly verboten. Perhaps we are overly optimistic, but thankfully, it looks like things will be easing up this season.

So, what can entertaining indoors at home look like this year? Here are four tips to get you started:

  1. SELECT. A good rule of thumb this season is to be selective. So many holiday traditions went uncelebrated last year, and our entertaining spaces may have been underutilized. Which traditions did you miss? What people did you miss? Smaller gatherings may still be à propos for some. Others may be more comfortable with a larger group. How can you creatively combine your favorite people with those missed traditions into this year’s planning?
  2. CREATE a new tradition. There has been so much conversation about our “new normal” over the past year. Have you noticed that its definition has also been a moving target that shifts almost as quickly as new COVID variants have emerged? In order to free up prep time both before and during your gathering, a great place to start is by simplifying the menu and making the most of your kitchen organization. The priority is time well spent over a great meal with the important people in your life.
  3. SERVE. To plate or not to plate, that is the question. Plating the meal enables you to create a beautiful visual presentation for your guests while minimizing the number of hands in serving. An elegant, well thought out buffet presentation allows for more choice for guests and frees up time for the host(s).
  4. BE GRATEFUL. What a gift it will be this year to be able to celebrate with those special people in our lives this year. Maybe invite each guest to write down on a note paper what they are most grateful for. These notes can then be read aloud during the course of the evening.
